6 Best Home Remedies to Ease Your Sore Throat in Pune

A sore throat or Pharyngitis is one of the most common problems within people of Pune. Whether it is a change in weather, allergy, or a reaction to eating or drinking something cold, a sore throat is an ailment that catches the body very quickly. It can be an onset of a cold or can be a symptom of the coronavirus. While it is important to get yourself checked and cleared for the virus, even if from an online doctor, it can be simply a sore throat and nothing more.

If caught and treated early, a sore throat typically goes away in 3-5 days. Apart from allopathic medicines, there are several home remedies that help in relieving the soreness too. However, it is advised to seek medical advice from an ENT specialist in Pune before diving into such treatments. Here are six such home remedies:

  1. Salt Water Gargles: Salt water gargles are one of the age-old remedies that have been passed down through generations in India.

How to: Heat some water and add a pinch of salt. Gargle with this water at least 3-4 times a day.

What does it do: Salt water may not offer immediate relief from soreness or pain, but it loosens the mucus on the upper part of the lungs. It kills the bacteria and helps in easing pain in due course of time.

  1. Honey: Honey has some magical properties that make it a popular ingredient in sore throat remedies.

How to: Add a teaspoon of honey to a glass of warm water. You can add lemon to this concoction too. Drink this twice a day to soothe your throat. You can even add some honey to your daily tea if you like.

What does it do: Honey works wonders in suppressing night-time cough, allowing you to sleep soundly and rest well. It is also proven to be effective in healing wounds which means that it may help in easing soreness in the throat.

  1. Herbal Tea: Whether it is chamomile, peppermint, or raspberry tea, herbal teas have been proven extremely effective in offering relief from throat soreness.

How to: Make tea as per directions. Add honey or ginger for better effects.

What does it do: While green tea and clove tea have anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, chamomile and peppermint are great for relieving pain and reducing inflammation. Ensure that you check the caffeine content of such teas and keep it low to get maximum rest.

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar: There are many different ways of using Apple Cider Vinegar to treat sore throats. It is best to consult a doctor online before trying this remedy.

How to: Dilute 1 to 2 tablespoons of ACV in one cup of water and repeatedly gargle one to two times a day. Make sure to drink multiple glasses of water in between the gargling sessions.

What does it do: Apple cider vinegar has several natural anti-bacterial properties. Numerous studies show its antimicrobial properties are effective in fighting infections. Its acidic nature helps in breaking down mucus in the throat and stops bacteria from spreading.

  1. Garlic: While Garlic may or may not be liked by you in your food, it is a hero when it comes to relieving a sore throat.

How to: Place a peeled garlic clove between your teeth and cheek and keep sucking on it. Let its juices do the magic. While this may make your breath smell, it will make your sore throat go away quickly.

What does it do: A compound called allicin, found in Garlic, is effective in killing the bacteria and fighting the germs that may have caused the infection.

  1. Plenty of fluids and rest: There is no replacement for this step. Sometimes a sore throat may take its full cycle of 3-5 days before recovery. The best cure for a sore throat is drinking lots of water and getting enough sleep. Allow your body to fight the infection and let it rest while it does so.

While some of these remedies work, you might need something stronger in some cases. Speak to an ENT specialist in Pune to get the best treatment.
