How Quickly Do Teeth Move with Invisalign?
Invisalign has been used as an orthodontic treatment option since its introduction to the market in 1997. In this time, millions of patients have used the clear aligners to move their teeth into a more optimal position. Before and after invisalign photos have become increasingly popular on the Internet, but do they tell the whole story? Let’s find out!
What happens during treatment
Braces are used to manipulate teeth invisalign before and after, which is why we recommend wearing them during your orthodontic treatment. If you’re choosing clear aligners instead of metal braces, you can use them without needing braces. However, we do still suggest wearing them during treatment to speed up tooth movement and allow us to take a closer look at what’s happening on a regular basis. The earlier we spot any potential issues, the better. Just make sure to continue using your aligners every day as instructed by your doctor or dentist so you get long-lasting results!
What are the results like?
Everybody is different and responds to treatments differently. The results you’ll see will depend largely on how well you follow through with your treatment plan. If you have a well-maintained mouth and work hard to do what you need to do, chances are good that you’ll see an improvement in your smile. An important note: please know that in order for teeth to move properly in alignment, they must be properly hydrated. This means drinking lots of water (and avoiding sugary drinks), limiting hot beverages and practicing careful dental hygiene (brushing at least twice daily, flossing regularly and seeing your dentist for cleanings). These lifestyle choices can make a big difference on what results you see before and after invisalign!
How long does treatment take?
It all depends on how quickly you and your teeth are able to shift. To be sure, treatment time is different for every patient. And while there’s no guarantee of how long it will take, we can tell you that most patients see changes in their teeth within two weeks of starting treatment. That said, many do achieve their desired result within a few months. On average, about two years of treatment is necessary to achieve ideal alignment—with nearly half of that being before braces and half after—but again, each case is different. While some patients see results within just a few months, others may need to wait as long as a year or more before getting what they want out of treatment. But don’t give up! You’ll likely notice improvement over time. If not, let us know and we can adjust your treatment plan accordingly.
Can you eat whatever you want during treatment?
The biggest myth about getting Invisalign® is that you can eat whatever you want. But it’s not true! During your treatment, avoid crunchy and sticky foods (like chips, popcorn and hard candy) that could damage your aligners. You’ll also want to avoid hot liquids or anything too cold (like iced coffee).
What side effects should I expect during treatment?
Invisalign treatment is safe and effective. However, it’s important to know that, as with any orthodontic treatment, some patients may experience temporary side effects. These can vary depending on your teeth and bite issues and may include: sore mouth or jaw; bumps in your mouth (as you begin wearing aligners); tooth sensitivity; dry lips (if you tend to talk a lot while wearing aligners); tongue irritation; slight headaches (if your bite is more off-center than usual). If you have any of these symptoms or notice others—especially if they persist—speak to your doctor right away. If appropriate, he or she will adjust your treatment plan accordingly. You should also check in with him or her after each set of aligners are removed. This is because when aligners are out, there’s nothing keeping your teeth from moving back into their original positions. If you don’t wear retainers at night during this time, for example, you could end up with crooked teeth again.
When will I be able to see results on my teeth?
Before and after Invisalign photos can be useful in showing friends, family members and colleagues how dramatic an improvement there can be once you’ve completed your treatment. That’s why your Seattle-area dentist offers a variety of before-and-after photographs on their website. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that you should have three sets taken: one on day one, one during treatment (before any movement has taken place) and a final set at your post-treatment appointment.
