Lord Sebastian Coe On Finding His Life Path Plus How To Find Yours
Lord Sebastian Coe is one of the most successful athletes in British history with four olympic medals and a further four european athletics medials. Due his staggering sporting success he was the figurehead of the 2012 British Olympics.

Coe’s Career
As a middle-distance runner, Coe won four Olympic medals, including the 1500 metres gold medal at the Olympic Games in 1980 and 1984. He set eight outdoor and three indoor world records in middle-distance track events – including, in 1979, setting three world records in the space of 41 days and the world record he set in the 800 metres in 1981 remained unbroken for over fifteen years. Coe dominated middle distance racing for much of the 1980s.
Following Coe’s retirement from athletics, he was a member of parliament for the Conservative Party from 1992 to 1997, and became a Life Peer on 16 May 2000. He headed the successful London bid to host the 2012 Summer Olympics and became chairman of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games. In 2007, he was also elected a vice-president of the International Association of Athletics Federations.
In November 2012 he was appointed chairman of the British Olympic Association and by 2012 he was of one of 24 athletes inducted as inaugural members of the International Association of Athletics Federations Hall of Fame. Due to his profound sporting success he was presented with the Lifetime Achievement award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year in December 2012.
The Importance of Direction
You could say that Coe’s athletic success was inevitable, given his natural talent, dedication and love of running. He explains: “. I found it easier, I mean I have to say I found running easy.”
It was then a life changing occurred. Coe caught a glimpse of the olympic ceremony on the TV, he was mesmerised. It was from then on his life goal was set. He said: “It introduced me to something that changed the direction of my life.”
Coe was lucky to have such a specific aim and direction from the early ages of his life. Many struggles for years to find their forte and some may not find it all. You can just sit and wait for a sign hoping like Coe one will come to you, or you can take initiative and set your own path. Some questions you may consider asking yourself to find your path are:
What energies and excites you? This one’s the first obvious step—we all want to enjoy and actually like our careers. Is there a job you would do job for free? Coe certainly would run for free.
What are you good at? Coe knew he was good at running from a young age. Is there anything you are notably good at enjoy?
Try an internship. A great way to decide your path is to try walking down a few. Take on some internships and experience different careers. Not only will this help you to choose a route but the experience will look great on your CV.
Find a mentor. Coe turned to trainers to seek professional advice and direction. Many mentors are available for you to do the same.
Explore unconventional careers. Like Coe, why not try pursuing an unconventional career? We all know the popular careers available to us—doctor, lawyer, teacher, computer engineer, police officer, store owner, etc. If you feel uninspired by the typical choices, know that there are thousands of unusual jobs you might not have heard about, do some research.
Ask around. Perhaps the best way to discover a new career is to ask other people about theirs—assuming you come into contact with people who don’t all work in the same field. .
Make a career plan. Coe set his goal and pursued it. Those feeling directionless should follow in his footsteps. As with most things, your career will benefit if you have goals and a plan for it.
See your career as many stepping stones, not a svtraight path. .
