FINDING A PLACE TO LIVE IN CHINA FOR EDUCATION

Arrival in CHINA

When I was looking for a education consultants in Islamabad or a job I was not able to escape my attention that I was moving to a different city or country in the opposite part of the world, and I had absolutely no clue as to where I was going to stay! I’d never even found an apartment in the UK and I was going to get it? In the country of which I didn’t even know the language.

Fortunately, it turned out I didn’t need to. I could have the option of finding my own place and being given a monthly allowance or receive assistance in finding my place and be provided.

The Search

The search for a suitable place in China was a nightmare, and I ended up staying in a hotel for the duration of one week, but it was only 5 minutes away from my school, and I appreciated the comfort of cleaning the house, so it wasn’t an issue. The lady picked me up and drove me to a luxury building that was more luxurious than any I’ve seen here at home. She took me into the office of estates to see with the person who was the agent for viewing.

Making a Decision

In the way, I’ve described them you’d think that I chose the first option however I did not. Whatever the reason, I was attracted by the humble traditional house in the midst of all it’s beige and brown. It had an appealing charm that made it feel more comfortable and cozy than the completely clean home. When I had made my decision after which we returned to the estate office, Jennifer engaged in a lengthy and intense conversation with the agent in order to bargain down the cost. Then, I had an apartment key in my personal apartment.

Moving In

After collecting my luggage at the airport and leaving Jennifer and Jennifer, I took a trip to the 19th floor, where my apartment was located in China, to take an in-depth look at my place for the coming year. The first thing to become obvious was the fact that carpet floors were uncommon in China.

The Layout

As I stepped through the door to my front, I was welcomed by an open-plan living and dining area completely furnished with two sofas that are well-worn and a coffee table, the largest flat-screen television, as well as a stunning marble-topped dining table with the traditional Lazy Susan to the left (a popular feature of Chinese dining rooms to accommodate the numerous dishes shared.

In the living room, there was the bathroom. It was an en-suite bathroom with a Western-style toilet and sink, a wall-mounted mirror, and showerheads that detach. It was simple, but it was practical. The only drawback is that your toilet could become wet every time you took a shower, but this was never anything to worry about.

The Bedrooms

When I returned to the inside I found two bedrooms available on each side of the living room/dining arrangement. The two bedrooms were identical mirrors of the other, equipped with huge wardrobes as well as a double bed and the much-needed air cooling unit. The bed was huge enough for a single person, it was dressed with exquisite intricate wood carvings on the headboard.

I was sadly forced to ruin the stunning scene by covering it with mosquito nets because I soon discovered during my first few days there that I was popular and a favorite spot for mosquitoes in the area and needed the most protection I could get.

A Room With a View

The last thing that was certainly my favorite, was the view from the balcony. Luckily, heights don’t pose an issue for me. Because 19 floors above it was a stunning view. My apartment was just one of many that made up the complex, with the most beautiful courtyard.

I was lucky to have an inside-facing balcony which meant I could directly view the courtyard, with its beautiful pool and lush greenery. Being high in the air also allowed me to enjoy a prime view of sunset and sunrise, and also watching the city lights go off one by one when it got darker each night.

Safety

The security of the building never seemed to be an issue during my time living there. Since it was a guarded and gated complex that required a card to gain entry inside. The passcard was also required to gain access to the apartment or be ushered in by a resident. Which made it very secure to let any person walk in.

The safety of the area in and of itself was a significant aspect for me. Particularly being a woman living on her own in a foreign land. However, no matter what time of the day the weather was like. I was always at ease returning back to my home. My house was just 25 minutes from the college I taught for, while the walk was always crowded with pedestrians and traffic.

At one time I recall returning to the town’s center at 2 in the morning after having seen an evening premiere at the theater, and the streets were just as packed and secure as they did during the morning.

Costs

Cost-wise I didn’t end up paying a dime and the company paid for my utilities, rent, and internet access. However, my friends informed me that they would amount to about RMB400 each month. And the house itself could cost about RMB2000 per month. It’s true that at first glance the place doesn’t appear attractive, but it soon transformed into my new home. When it came time to go I was devastated to leave my small sanctuary and sincerely thanked it for taking care of me, and for the great memories, it had given me.
