Freud and his phallic orientated outlook on the world. And rightly so, Freud well deserves his lofty title as the Grandfather of psychoanalysis.

However, does psychoanalysis still deserve the stereotypical view of therapy the word carries- of therapists with bushy beards interpreting your dreams?

After reading Stephen Grosz’s book,

The Examined Life: How We Lose and Find Ourselves, I felt an old stereotype gladly challenged.

I cautiously began to read, and so found myself delving into the world of psychoanalysis and becoming,

‘lost’, in the perspectives of the self that are revealed when embracing everyday situations of pain, confidence, lies, and love.

Upon first glance at the subtitle of this book I found myself doing what we are taught from a young age not to do; judging a book by its cover.

Was this another self-help book gracing our shelves?

A DIY guide to self-satisfaction and fulfillment?

These are key components in the complex web of relationships we find woven around ourselves and the people we choose to spend our lives with. Psychoanalysis Laid Bare: ‘The Examined Life

This book demonstrates how basic human tendencies can be unveiled in the actions and behaviors we partake in.

It details the important role of talking in understanding the emotional motivations behind our actions;

one of our most fundamental and natural

abilities yet often avoided in our society.

The cases Stephen Grosz describes move past the words being said in his therapy sessions to the gaps in-between that often we fail to hear.

Stephen Grosz demonstrates how during psychoanalysis one must ask oneself not what the client is saying or feeling, but

how the client wants the analyst to feel,

and why they need the analyst to feel like

that. He shows throughout the pages of the book that a client’s response is not always a certainty.

Grosz paints an open picture of his role as an analyst as not the omniscient expert but the listener.

To those skeptical of trusting a stranger with their most intimate issues, comfort may be found in seeing this therapy as almost a dual process: the analyst adopts a dynamic position as leader, taking the client through the talking method, and learner, taking on board the unique process of each client and their own personal outcomes.

By summarizing the arduous process of his cases he describes his clients’ struggle within therapy, surmounting in either their relief upon ‘finding’ themselves or their acceptance o
