Facial Cleansers: Make Your Skincare Journey a Success

The stratum corneum is the skin’s outermost layer made up mainly of keratin and corneocytes. It functions together with the other layers of the skin as a barrier against external factors such as pathogens and environmental temperature. Unfortunately, this outer layer of the epidermis is thinner on the face than on other body parts.

Additionally, the skin’s fat layer on the face is also thinner, making it delicate and prone to damage. Thus, establishing a skincare routine is paramount. Meanwhile, as facial cleansers are the building blocks of your regimen, it is essential to know how you should use them appropriately to make your skincare journey a success.

Before Cleansing Your Face

Most people rely heavily on their cleansers to remove all the dirt, products, and pollution that their face has accumulated throughout the day. And although there are some cleansers powerful enough to cut through sunscreens and long-wear makeup, helping them do their job is preferable. Thus, you must use a gentle makeup remover, especially at night.

Makeup remover wipes, micellar water, and balm or oil-based makeup removers prevent congestion from clogged pores. You may also try the double cleansing method by combining any of the two products mentioned. Most importantly, you must not forget that this is just the preliminary step, and you must proceed to wash your face with gentle cleansers.

Washing Your Face

The facial cleanser you choose makes or breaks the success of your skincare routine. In addition, you must resist the temptation to go rough on your skin and rub it during an acne breakout. Your skin is sensitive, and you aim to take care of it. So, here are a few more tips you should be mindful of while you wash your face:

1.     The Type of Cleanser

Many facial cleansers are available today, but you must choose non-alcohol-containing, gentle, and non-abrasive products. In addition, a gentle cleanser that comes in creamy consistency is best for dry and sensitive skin, while gel or foamy cleansers are suitable for oily and acne-prone skin. Meanwhile, individuals who don’t have these conditions and have normal skin can use a water-based brand.

2.     The Water Temperature

Experts recommend that you use lukewarm water in the process. Water in extreme temperatures, too cold or too hot, can cause skin irritation and flushing. Meanwhile, washing your face with water alone is okay for people with ultrasensitive skin, but sanitising with a gentle cleanser is recommended, especially before bedtime.

3.     Using Your Hands

A mesh sponge or rough washcloth may irritate your skin. Thus, it is ideal to use your hands and fingertips in washing your face. So it would be best to wash your hands thoroughly before touching your face to avoid germ transfer.

You must then wet your hands and face with water to provide a good lather as you apply the cleanser. This specific time of your day is perfect for practising self-care by giving yourself a facial massage. As such, you should apply the gentle cleanser to your face by forming small circles upward with your fingertips using light pressure.

It would be best not to forget to include your neck and jaw in this particular step. And after rinsing with water, you must dry your face by patting a soft antimicrobial towel.

4.     How Many Times Should You Cleanse?

Dermatologists limit only washing your face to a usual twice a day and after sweaty exercises. Moreover, washing your face every morning and night is almost a common practice.

Sweat, in specific, brings in dirt and pathogens that may irritate your skin. Thus, washing your skin as quickly as possible is beneficial.

Knowing your skin type aids in determining which kind and brand of facial cleanser would suit you. In addition, being mindful of certain tips and limits on cleansing instances can prevent dry skin and too much oil production. Finally, you should always prioritise washing your face before bed, even if your busy morning schedule can’t accommodate it or you forget it at times.
