The Facts you Should Know About CT Scan Test

The very first thing that usually comes to mind everyone when someone feels pain or falls ill again and again is, why it is happening and how I can be okay again. To better understand the reason behind the pain or sickness, you need to know the root cause of the problem. To know about what is affecting your health, doctors recommend several kinds of imaging tests like CT- Scan, Ultrasound, MRI, X-Rays etc.  In this blog, we will discuss in detail one of the most common imaging technique i.e CT Scan.

What is a CT Scan?

CT Scan (Computerized Tomography) is the most common and highly used diagnostic imaging technique.  It is used to capture a sequence of X-ray images of the bones, blood vessels and soft tissues from varying angles, and use the computer to combine the sequence of X-Ray images to generate cross-sectional images.  And allows a doctor to see what is going on inside the body of a patient in more detail than a regular scan. It is an ideal scan for quick examination of patients with internal injuries or trauma.

Types of the CT Scan

In the medical industry, there are many types of CT scans. Depending on the target organs of the body or body parts for evaluation, they are different from each other. The different types of CT scans mostly available are mentioned below.

  2. Thoracic CT Scan: The scan for the Chest area
  3. Extremities: The scan for lower Limbs, upper limbs and shoulder
  4. Cranial CT Scan: The scan for the Head region

The procedure of CT Scan

CT Scan procedure is a very simple, non-invasive and painless procedure. It provides detailed images of bones, tissues and blood vessels inside the body. It produces images in the shade of black and grey colour. In some cases, Technicians use contrast media (a special dye) to increase the contrast level and resolution of the final images for a more accurate diagnosis.

Before discussing the procedure of CT Scan, we will discuss the conditions in which CT Scan is performed with and without contrast media.

Scan With contrast                                                   Scan Without contrast

Staging of Cancer                                                      Closed Injuries of Head

Acute Appendicitis                                                     Diseases of Lungs

Bowel Diseases                                                         Swollen Tissues,  Arm and Legs injuries

Pulmonary Embolism                                                  Kidney Stone

Now we will discuss the complete procedure of a CT Scan

  • A CT scan uses Rotating X-Ray Machine and computer for taking a picture from various angles and creating cross-sectional images of the body.
  • During a CT scan procedure, the patient lies on a table in a tunnel-like machine. The inside of the machine rotates and takes a series of X-rays from various angles.
  • After that, all the pictures are sent to a computer to create cross-sections images or 3-D images of a particular area of the body.

Preparation

CT scans don’t require any special or much preparation.

  1. If the patient needs contrast dye for CT Scan, then the technician will guide you accordingly for refraining from eating solid foods for up to 4 hours before the test. Especially in the cases of Abdomen Scans.
  2. In the case of oral contrast for a CT scan, the patient will get the contrast dye before the day of the scan and will be instructed to prepare and drink accordingly.
  3. In the case of intravenous (IV) contrast, the technician will guide the patient accordingly. A catheter will be inserted into the vein of the patient when a patient will arrive at the testing facility.
  4. Before undergoing a CT scan, a patient needs to remove metallic objects inclusive of jewellery, piercings, watches, hairpins, dentures, hearing aids etc.
  5. It takes 20 mins to 1 hour for the test.
